Résumé : This book with 12 chapters is divided into three parts, viz., genomics, genetic engineering, and commercialization. Part I (Chapters 1 to 5) is focused on describing genomic methods, their application to the characterization of woody perennials, and the results derived from these analyses. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the analytical approaches used to study the genomes of tree species, including the analysis of DNA, the transcriptome, and the proteome. The properties of conifer genomes are reviewed in Chapter 2. The properties of the genomes of species within the genera Eucalyptus, Populus, and other woody angiosperms recently sequenced are described in Chapter 3. The final two chapters of this section review the impact of genomics on the study of tree populations (Chapter 4) and breeding for genetic improvement (Chapter 5). Part II focuses on forest biotechnology, which encompasses more than just genetic engineering. It begins with Chapter 6 by describing how it is done and then provide several examples of the ways in which it has been used, for both basic and applied research, in Chapters 7-10. Part III deals with the commercialization of transgenic plants. Chapter 11 describes which agencies are involved and the process for getting the required paperwork and approvals. Finally, Chapter 12 discusses the need for and the ways in which innovations such as these can be protected, with an emphasis on plant biotechnology.
